BULLY : A REViEW
boney
16:04h
Really hard to watch, for so many reasons. I was uncomfortable watching 'A Ma Soeur!' because of the graphic sexual scenes involving a supposed 15 year old girl completely naked with an older man. If anything, Bully is more gratuitous. The camera doesn't so much film the often scantily-clad cast as leer over it - particularly in one cheeky crotch shot of Ali of which the actress involved, Bijou Phillips, later said "'What the fuck is that bullshit? That's not OK.......I'm sitting there doing a scene and they're shooting down my crotch." Larry Clark whipped up a load of shit over similar themes with his brilliant directorial debut 'Kids' a few years back, but this is a step further on even from that.
The story itself is harrowing and real. However, a small few have questioned the depiction of some of the characters, as you would expect for a true story adaptation. Set in middle-class Broward County, Florida (a place best known previously - to me at least - for being where a record shop owner was arrested for selling a 2 Live Crew album, but I digress), the movie starts with the relationship between Marty Puccio (Brad Renfro) and Bobby Kent (Nick Stahl). We see them trying to cop with girls, then going to a gay club where Bobby eggs Marty into dancing on the stage. It soon becomes apparent that Bobby is a bit of a power freak; his relationship with Marty is basically frustrated sexual desire translated into physical and psychological abuse. Bobby is confident and aggressive with women (or should I say 'girls'?), but way over the top - he tries to rape Ali whilst making her watch gay porn. You get the feeling he loathes women wholeheartedly. Ali's friend Lisa (who in real life was a lot more chunky than the rather svelte Michael Pitt, formerly of Dawsons Creek), the hopelessly fucked stoner-dude who plays Mortal Kombat on acid with Derek (the also excellent Daniel Franzese). Donny barely seems to know where he is half the time, let alone be able to display any evidence of thought processes. Donny's girlfriend Heather (Kelli Garner) and 'The Hitman' Derek Kaufman (Leo Fitzpatrick) complete the gang. My favourite scene in this movie (discounting the horrible murder scene) was just after the Mortal Kombat on acid scene. The seven have driven up to see The Hitman to arrange to get Bobby bumped off. Kaufman is projecting himself as a hard gang type, although this is in doubt; his fellow gang members all seem to be local kids who nick shit car radios. On the drive over, the whole damn car have slipped some acid (even the driver - how irresponsible ;o] ). Clark simulates the absolute lack of clarity and swirliness of the trip by simply rotating around from within the circle that the group are in. Done with a digital camera, this causes a helluva lot of digital blurry shit which disfigures the previously sharp image. When the camera finally settles back on The Hitman, you do actually feel relieved to have escaped the vertigous effect. A lot of press have tried to shape 'Bully' into a wake up call to American parents. Hell, the tagline is "It's 4am...do you know where your kids are?". The parents in the movie are largely conspicuous by their absence. The main paternal influence comes from Bobby's father, who is trying to distance Bobby from his loser friend Marty and make sure he graduates. Otherwise, all we learn is that Ali has a small child whom her parents look after, and there are casual but rare sightings of the others' folks. They seem to have very little involvement in their kids day-to-day affairs. This is pretty natural for a late teenager; the parents have provided well for their children - use of the car is always easy, they live pretty well. It seems that this horrific murder, although catalysed by horrific acts from the eventual victim, had it's seed fertilised by boredom, pure teenage egoistic stupidity and a bizarre amoral vacuum that prevented the seven from going beyond the first apparent solution to the Bobby Kent problem. All this leads to seven loosely connected youths - some of whom had never met Bobby before - who horrifically took his life in a haze of self-encouragement, peer pressure, various drugs and blind rage. Great movie, powerful shit. I gots ta read the book methinks. Oh, maybe this article might help explain the superb performances of the whole cast.... ... Comment

The real Marty Puccio
Hi everyone , much like most of you I seen Bully and didn't exactly know how to feel after . When I see Marty was sentenced to death I felt like it was a member of my own family . It's hard to explain and I know most ppl think he is a murderer and deserves it , but the feeling I got made me get to know the real Marty Puccio and find out what happened to lead up to the tragic event that night that caused Bobby Kent to be killed. The movie was based on the book and the book was 90% lies . I invite anyone interested enough in this story to join us at a group created for Marty . groups.yahoo.com
Thanks . ... Link

Get The F*** Outta Here
Let me be the first to say that Marty did kill someone. As his personal friend Marty regrets doing what he did, has come to terms with it and moved on. If anybody Wants to know what really happend just write to him and ask him. Hes not shy about letting the world know what really happend from his point of veiw. Marty should be released due to the fact that 5 of the 7 involved are already out of jail including Lisa. His address is as follows:
Martin Puccio #963022 E2216-U Okaloosa Correctional Institution 3189 Little Silver Road Crestveiw, Florida 32539 Don't judge him until you hear what really happend from his point of veiw. No one can tell a story better than the people that truly expierenced! ... link ... Comment

time served
Hi, I've been writing Marty for a year and all I have to say is that no one will ever really know what went on that night but in the here and now Marty has an 11 year old daughter who's missed out on her childhood. People who mug and stab people for hardly any other reason than a few quid get lighter sentences than Marty who one way or another at least had provocation. Of course you can't just go around offing people but as a kid you don't always consider the real life repercussions. I was arrested for murder at 15 and since have married and have two sons and have become a productive person. I don't even recognise the 15 year old i used to be and I feel that Marty is highly unlikely to go on a spontaneous killing spree should he be released and that the only 0ne who is being punished now is his little girl who god knows must have enough of a stigma without having to visit her dad in prison. Bobby's parents have deserved to see some punishment meted out for the unlawfull killing if their son and I think 1i years is justice now let the poor sod out to get on with his life. Aside from prison time and life, Marty's missed out on his daughters life, faced the death sentence and then been thrust into the public eye by hollywood cashing in to have the whole world judge him all over again.
As for Bobby Kent, if you saw the size of him you'd know no one would tackle him without a damn good reason and all I have to say about the film is that the casting was shit ( Bobby was a brick shithouse not some lanky little ratboy) and the story, based around the book is seriously embellished. The book admits it if you check the small print, but hey, it all adds to the drama! ... Link

Give me a break
Marty should have though about his daughter before he killed someone ...and make no mistake, he did kill someone. Hell no, 11 years is not enough time for someone who has yet to show any remorse for taking a person's life. Maybe if he had shown a bit of common sense and remourse, he would be out by now.
I don't think he's learned the important lesson - it's wrong to take a person's life or the law into your own hands. He still goes on about the abuse he suffered as an EXCUSE for MURDERING somebody. If he had beat the guy to a bloody pulp or simply stabbed him without killing him than I might agree with you. But I think that someone who actively was invovled in a murder should serve more than 11 years. Prison is punishment and no he can't just get onw with his life. Neither Mary or Lisa thought about their child before doing something so STUPID! ... link

Get Fucking Real
Look all you dumb motherfuuckers who say that Bobby deserved to die, your all forgetting something called will power, the truth of the matter is Marty liked the abuse he could have just stop being friends and go on with his life when he had a chance but he stuck around. Its fucked up to think that theres nothing wrong for a group of stupid ass kids to have all gone and killed a pleading boy. Fuck Marty let him get what he deserves and maybe he is sorry but its to late now. The only ones I feel any sympathy for is the parents of Bobby Kent, I couldnt even imagine what ill do if that would have happen to one of my kids. People cant go around KILLING everyone that looks at them in a bad way, and if your stupid enough to stick around after sopposeably they bully you then maybe you deserve to get beat every once in a while.

That's right
Killing is not only wrong it's also a sin and maybe Bobby kind of diservid what had happend to him but, still Marty should of just stayed away from him instead of feeling sorry for Bobby every time Bobby would appolgized for something he would do wrong if one of my friends began punking me or started bullying me around I would just kick there ass or stop hanging out with them, also I was wondering what Gang was Bobby affilteid with?

Curious...
I'm not going to call anyone names or tell you what you should think about this situation....however, I am going to ask a simple question (and hope I am not ridiculed later)....why hasn't anyone brought up the fact that Lisa played a huge role in this crime? I understand she did not physically inflict Bobby, but then again, neither did Charles Manson. I was surprised her sentencing, done correct the first time I thought, was sadly reduced to barely nothing...9 years I think. Everyone involved in this crime fed off someone else. They should be equally held accountable.

Here's my Two Cents.
I too have seen the movie and read up a lot on the individuals that were involved. I don't condone anything that they did, but I honestly believe that a person can only take so much before they snap. I am not saying he was right by all means, but I can understand how someone can lose site of reality after being through so much abuse. I too believe Lisa should have received more of a sentence as I believe she was aware of Marty's weaknesses and knew that he could be easily persuaded to do what she wanted. I feel bad for him in one way as I honestly believe he didn't know how to get Bobby out of his life without actually physically moving away. A lot of the times abused people don't know how to let go, they become so insecure about themselves they take any type of attention they can get because they feel that's what they deserve. Same with some people that are kidnapped, they have been known to become protective of their captor because they've become so dependent on them. Weird I know, but until someone is in that situation you don't know what an individual is thinking. Like I mentioned above, I don't condone what he did, but honestly believe he was in another frame of mind during that time.

Where Were the Parents?
As a veteran teacher and school administrator, that's the question I asked. The answer is simple. They didn't want to provoke confrontations with their children. It was OK for these kids to drop out of high school (makes me wonder about how pro-active the counselors and administrators were at their schools, but the fact is that WE are not our students' parents), not work, do drugs constantly with their parent's tacit permission and not have to account for anything to anyone.
I've seen bullying first-hand and I've always done what I could to stop it. My efforts went much further than simply saying I would not permit such behavior in my classroom or my school — but they weren't always successful. It's obvious that Bobby Kent's parents didn't realize their son was a sadistic bully. They must be related to ostriches! I'll reserve judgment on Marty because his parents obviously didn't have the kind of relationship with him that allowed him to explain why he wanted the family to move. If it were possible, I'd want all the setnecing judges to slap the parents with the maximum for "reckless endangerment." They endangered not only their children, but an entire community, by their poor to non-existent parenting. They should have been placed in cells alongside their children. Just as an FYI, I have 20 years experience in secondary education and have all the necessary graduate degrees to know what I'm talking aboiut. I've seen and worked with abused children and battered women. It is true that, eventually, the victim comes to believe he/she deserves such abuse. I have mixed feelings about both the death penalty (although I don't think Marty warranted that sentence) and whether Bobby Kent "needed to be killed" (as a Catholic, I don't believe that any of us, individually, can decide to end a life0. However, this isn't "your ordinary capital murder case." (My sister, a criminal defense attorney for more than 10 years, made that comment to me. I asked if she had the choice to prosecute — which she also has done — or defend in this case, she conceded that she couldn't make up her mind. There were so many legal, moral and sociological factors.) I can tell you that I know Florida and if the defendents were black, they ALL would have been maxed out and Marty would be dead by now. My brother lives and practices medicine in that state and I've visited often enough to know what happens to minority defendants in major cases. Joey P.S. When I was a classroom teacher, I taught English. Many of the commenters who have posted to this topic would NOT have earned a passing grade from me. Actually, comments riddled with errors and grammatical non-sequiturs seem to make less sense than well-organized, mechanically correct comments. I mean, I understand the meanings, but I spent 10 years reading what seemed to be hieroglyphics written by my students! <LOL> ... link

Re: Where were the Parents
God, finally an intelligent posting! I could not agree with you more. Ive recently seen the movie and this has prompted me to do alot more research on this case. I have also read the book, which goes into much more detail about the trial and the sentencing. I work with troubled teens in New York and I have seen too many situations in which parents ignore issues in their teenagers, which result in detrimental circumstances. I would like to talk to my teens about this case as many of them have seen the movie (with mixed emotions), and many have vocalized an intention to kill step fathers and other abusers. I would like to get some materials on this case. If anyone knows of any resources, please contact me...thnx:)

Who are We to Judge?
I will only say this ! Marty Puccio deserves to be punished for what he did . There is no excuse for murder . However i feel little pity for Bobby Kent . It sounds like many people not only agree on the abusive and controlling nature of Bobby Kent , but experienced it first hand . I know that Martin Puccio made a bad choice , one that took the life of his friend , but we cannot judge someone , that is God's job . We all need to worrie about our own lives , and learn from this . We need to be good human beings , and be respectful to one another and live our lives always doing whats right no matter what . We can try to avoid another Bobby Kent, but we need to think about how we treat other people , that in it'self will make this world a better place .

Why don't any of you know how to write?
OF COURSE, Puccio deserves his punishment. OF COURSE, Kent did not deserve to be killed. But what I'm more interested in knowing is why none of you can write a grammatical sentence.
Also: Lots of stupid-assed opinions on this thread. ... link

Confussed
i read the book watched the movie and who ever wrote that they were just "Bored" is dumb!!! lisa is the one who had the idea first but they all sat down and plotted the whole thing and they all parisipated! no one held a guy to there head and said do this or i'll kill you. they did it on there own free will if you can blame lisa for all of it than i can blame my keyboard on miss spelled words! or blame the gun for killing someone! they all did wrong! even marty! and i aggree with the teacher i think that the parents should be punnished! all of them! how can you let your kids out of the house at all hours of the night just bacause they had a hissy fit i grew up in fla too and i had to be in at 10:00 every night if not i would get my ass beat!!! Parents should try to be parents not friends that is your job! if you want friends go find some it is your job to teach your kids right from wrong i was 15 and never had the thought to kill somene! I KNEW IT WAS WRONG!!!!!!!!! my parents tought me!
I grew up in a fairly white neighbor hood. but i did go to franklynn jr high and if they were black the would have all gotten the death pennility! they did take someones life but it is bullshit that all of the rest of them are out and not marty yes he did stab him but he didn't give the final blow and he didn't take him to the water and let him drown! I had a bully when i was little (her name will go unsaid) and we saw eachother alot i tryed to get away from her and not be friends with her but then you have no friends she spred roomers and eventually you go back to not be alone they bully you but they are there anyways when no one else is you get dependent on that! you all should step back and take a look at it from there point of view and all the thinks that were happening! you can say all you want about them but you will never truly know the whole story. ... link ...
